Warrington MP backs Woolston Rovers rugby funding bid

Charlotte Nichols, MP for Warrington North, met with Woolston Rovers and the Warrington Wolves Community Foundation at Hillock Lane to discuss the future of grass roots rugby.

She was joined by Councillor Lawrence Sheridan and Councillor Una Gilham, who are all working to help secure investment for the club.

The club needs funding from organisations, such as Sports England, to be able to improve its facilities.

In order to access this funding, the club needs to show that it has security of tenure at its playing ground.

This is one of the main challenges that Woolston Rovers faces.

Ms Nichols said: “It was good to meet with Woolston Rovers Rugby League Club and the Warrington Wolves Community Foundation alongside Cllr Una Gilham and Cllr Lawrence Sheridan to discuss how to secure the investment the club needs into its facilities.

“Woolston Rovers are keen to grow, and to develop more opportunities for women and girls to take up the sport and to provide facilities for its existing teams and visiting clubs that they can be proud of.

“Rugby League is at the heart of who we are as a community and I’m hopeful that over the coming months working together to help the club achieve its ambitions.”

The club was founded in 1959 at Lido Country Club, and for its first two seasons played without a pitch of its own.

Over the years, the club has moved to different sites including Victoria Park and Bennetts Recreation Ground in Padgate, before moving to its current site at the Monks Sports and Social Club on Hillock Lane.
