Today, Charlotte Nichols MP spoke in the House following the Foreign Secretary’s announcement of further sanctions against illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.
Charlotte welcomed these measures, alongside our international allies, as an important step in our nations commitment to uphold international law.
But she also raised concerns about the potential impact on British Jews preparing to celebrate the upcoming High Holy Days. In particular, Sukkot begins later this month, when Jewish people traditionally use an etrog (citron) and lulav as part of the festival.
“Those responsible for illegal settlement activity should face consequences for their actions, but that burden should never fall on British Jews simply seeking to practise their faith.
“I was pleased to receive assurances from the Secretary of State that appropriate religious exemptions will be in place, and that the Government will engage with the British Jewish community to ensure these measures do not prevent people from observing their faith.”
