Warrington celebrates 34th Ukraine Independence Day

A SPECIAL event was held in Warrington to mark the 34th Ukraine Independence Day.

It was hosted by the Ukrainian Family Hub which was founded in the town in 2022 to support anyone who is a host or a guest under the Government’s Homes for Ukraine scheme.

Taking place at The Daten in Culcheth on September 7, celebrations began with a rendition of the Ukrainian National Anthem, followed by a fascinating presentation about the country.

A Certification of Appreciation from commander and lieutenant colonel Oleksandr Korsukov was then handed to the hub which was passed to members Olha Shalaieva and Anatolii Shalaiev when they took a vehicle full of supplies to Ukraine in August.

Special guests were at the event, including Mayor of Warrington Mo Hussain, Cllr Paul Warburton, Warrington North MP Charlotte Nicholls and chair of the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain AUGB Father Taras Khomych.

Chair Adrienne Laing said: “It was an absolutely amazing day at the Ukrainian Family Hub Warrington.

“We were honoured to have the Warrington Mayor Cllr Mo Hussain Cllr Paul Warburton Charlotte Nichols MP and Father Taras with us to celebrate.

“We reflected on what it means to be Ukrainian and shared a minute’s silence to mark the continuing sacrifices of the Ukrainian people in defence of their homeland, shared Ukrainian dishes and sang and danced.

“We were also truly honoured to receive a Certificate of Appreciation from the Ukrainian military in recognition of the work of the hub supporting Ukrainians in the UK.”

Commenting on the event, MP Charlotte Nichols said: “Filled with joy, music, food and dancing, it was lovely to see the community come together and to preserve the cherished traditions from home.

“Britain and Ukraine stand together, and I hope we will soon see peace and the process of rebuilding Ukraine after the devastating war.

“Until then, thank you to our Ukrainian community and the local community who have shown them such a warm welcome for inviting me to share in celebrating Ukrainian culture here in the UK.”
