Charlotte Nichols MP has recently spoken with staff at Warrington JobCentre Plus about the Government’s Plan to Get Britain Working.
Located on Mersey Street near Warrington Town Centre, staff at Warrington JobCentre are there to help people with their career when they find themselves out of work.
Charlotte Nichols MP said:
‘It was great to visit the Warrington JobCentre this afternoon to discuss upcoming proposals affecting the DWP and how we can support more people into employment.
It was useful to hear about all the different measures to help people, and the partnerships working both with local employers and with third-sector organisations including the new Living Well Hub.
A number of measures were raised which would help them support more people, including around funding formulas for adult education, which I’ll be taking away as we head into the Budget and making the necessary reforms to the DWP to drive up economic activity and living standards.
Other Governments’ approaches to getting people back into work have been about punitive measures, rather than addressing the different barriers which might be keeping people out of the work place – from mental health support to specific support for care leavers who might need more help than their peers. Our Labour government believes that building people’s skills and confidence, and working with local employers to find people meaningful employment that suits their interests, is a far better approach and one that is championed here.’
Nationally 9.4 million people are now economically inactive, and 900,000 young people (1 in 8) are not in education, employment, or training.
The Government’s Back to Work Plan has three pillars – A new national jobs and career service to help get more people into work – a new work, health and skills plans for the economically inactive, led by Mayors and local areas – and finally a youth guarantee for all young people aged 18 to 21.
A record 2.8 million people are also out of work due to long-term sickness. The Health Secretary set out how cutting NHS waiting lists will get Britain back to health and back to work, and how by taking bold action on public health we can build the healthy society needed for a healthy economy.
